The Smart Money’s on You

Bargains are not just for those of us with modest incomes. In fact, research has indicated that many wealthy people get that way (and stay that way!) by seeking out the best deals. As David Anderson and Jessica Orwig report for Business Insider, rich people spend modestly, and when they do make a purchase, it’s a preplanned and carefully considered decision.

You may not be a millionaire, but that doesn’t mean you can’t adopt some of their smart habits! If you’re like most women, you use concealers on a daily basis to cover minor skin flaws or to even out your skin tone. You know what works for you in terms of shade and consistency. So why not pay half as much for twice the convenience? With the Smart Plan, you get your favorite Smart Cover products shipped to you automatically, for half the regular cost!

There are other ways we “normal folk” can emulate the rich, and it’s easier than you think.  Self-help icon and financial guru Tony Robbins asserts that even someone who is living paycheck to paycheck can afford to pay themselves. If the government imposes a tax on you, argues Robbins, you find a way to pay it. He suggests taxing yourself and finding creative ways to spend less in the present, in order to save for the future.

Robbins states that you don’t have to start off with a lot of money in order to accumulate wealth: “In reality, a small amount of money consistently set aside will provide a greater ability to achieve financial freedom.”

With the Smart Plan, you save 50% on products you consistently purchase anyway, and if you want to make any changes to your plan, a live Smart Cover representative is just a phone call away. There’s no better time than right now to make a change for the better, and start planning for a beautiful future!

Spring Cleaning Is Good for the Soul!

We all know that spring signifies new beginnings. If you get a special thrill from filling plastic bags with clothing to donate, and seeing all that freed up closet space, you’re not alone!

Paige Fowler, a writer for Shape.com, cites multiple studies concluding that having a decluttered space results in better mental and physical health. According to Fowler, people who live and work in an organized space eat better, work out more consistently, and are happier overall. Perhaps the most famous proponent of this theory is the author Marie Konti, who literally wrote the book on the subject.

The most well-known and oft-quoted tenet from her best-selling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, is to get rid of any items that no longer “spark joy.” Literally pick up an article of clothing or knick-knack and if you don’t feel that joyful spark, let it go.

Of course, when it comes to makeup, cleaning out your cosmetics bag is not just a good idea for your spiritual well-being. It’s also crucial to your physical health that you periodically replace certain items, especially mascara and eyeliner. Any cosmetic items that are used on or around the eyes should be replaced every three months, minimum.

Lip products are typically good up to around six months, and foundation is usually good for about one year. Powder has a longer shelf life, normally lasting about two years, provided you keep your products in a cool, dry place.

If it’s been awhile since you replaced some of the items in your cosmetics bag, why not give yourself the gift of a fresh start? Try Smart Cover’s Hollywood Makeup Artist Kit. It contains concealer, color corrector, makeup primer, bronzer, finishing powder, Smart Cover Sticks, brushes, and cleanser. With the right tools at your disposal, this will  be your most beautiful spring yet!

Why Are My Lips So Chapped?

Frigid temperatures and dry winter air can indeed wreak havoc on your lips, but what if it’s not all winter’s fault? If the leaves are back on the trees, you’re back in a light jacket, and your lips are still chapped, there might be something more serious going on.

Though it should be second nature to drink lots of water, too many of us fail at this basic act of self-care. If you’re not hydrating your body sufficiently, you will see the effects, which can include dry, cracked lips. So make sure you’re getting all the water your body craves, at least six glasses a day, according to most experts.

Sun damage can also cause chapped lips, because the delicate skin on your lips is especially vulnerable, yet often neglected, when it comes to sun protection. Be sure to use a lip balm that contains SPF before you head outside, even when it’s overcast. Remember: your lips are skin too!

It may sound counterintuitive, but licking your lips too much can also cause chapping. Even if this is your signature flirty move, you’re compromising your kisser! Remember, saliva contains chemicals meant to help break down food, so imagine what it’s doing to your lips over time.

Bustle.com writer Jessica Willingham warns that chapped lips can sometimes be a sign of an allergic reaction, or worse. Read the ingredients carefully when trying a new product to ensure that you don’t subject yourself to something your body can’t tolerate.

Smart Cover’s Tea Tree Oil Softening Stick gently softens and moisturizes your lips, and the ingredients are prominently listed right on our website.  When you’re taking care of yourself, drinking lots of water, eating nutritious foods, and protecting your lips from the elements, your lips will look healthy and luscious… and so will you!

Fine Lines Ain’t So Fine

There is a moment in virtually every person’s life, when his or her skin is the most flawless and magnificent that it will ever be. It is dewy and clear, with no visible pores, no acne, and no matter how harsh the lighting, no lines. It is glorious. Unfortunately, this usually occurs when you’re five years old… and then never again.

Puberty often brings an explosion of blemishes, blackheads, and other hormone-activated skin issues. You can’t appreciate the fact that your skin is wrinkle-free because you’re so preoccupied with the sudden onslaught of pimples and uncontrollably oily skin. Just when that whole situation starts to abate, other skin imperfections often begin to show themselves!

Typically, the first fine lines appear when you’re in your twenties or, if you’re lucky, early thirties. Beauty expert Shannon Boyce asserts that when you hit your twenties, “the skin responds to antioxidants less, making it more susceptible to damage caused by oxidative stressors. If that wasn’t enough, your skin also becomes drier. This is due to a leveling out of hormones…though you may still experience pimples and breakouts. Dry skin opens you up to fine lines around the eyes and mouth.”

Since dry skin makes you vulnerable to fine lines, be sure to use an oil-free moisturizer with SPF 30 during the day, and a moisturizer with antioxidants before bed. Of course, wash your face, but don’t over-wash, as that can be too drying for your skin.

Try washing your face with Smart Cover Makeup Remover and Cleanser before bed. Then apply the Vitamin Beauty Stick anywhere that fine lines can appear: around your eyes, mouth, and even on and around your lips. For the fine lines that can’t be erased or prevented altogether, use Smart Cover’s Camouflage Crème. We can’t make you five years old again, but we can help you recapture that flawless, youthful finish!

Spring into Action with These Fun Makeup Trends!

There are some universal truths when it comes to beauty: eyes should be alluring, lips should be kissable, skin should be clear and appear pore-free. However, there are certain trends that become popular from one year to the next, and even from one season to the next. It’s always fun to ring in a new season by experimenting with fresh makeup styles.

For spring of 2018, there are a few standout trends that will work on just about anybody! The cat-eye is a perennial favorite, but for this spring, there’s a new take on this classic look that makes it even more daring. As Ruby Buddemeyer writes for Marie Claire, “Rather than the sloping wings of a usual cat-eye, this spring’s revival is all about sharp angles in matte-black shades.”

Cheeks will have the rosy flush of new love, very appropriate for springtime, which is all about new beginnings. Instead of contouring your cheekbones within an inch of your life, or highlighting with a glittery blush, try a more natural look. Apply a soft pink to your cheeks, lips and the tip of your nose. Smart Cover’s Two-in-One Glow Stick is perfect in this capacity, and it goes on smoothly so you’ll get this sweet look in just a few seconds. Yes, the Glow Stick works just as well on cheeks and nose as it does on the lips!

For those of you who are sick of applying false eyelashes, Cosmopolitan beauty writer Victoria Jowett has good news for you! Subtle eyelashes— as in, just apply a quick coat or two of mascara and you’re done—are in this season! Shiny, juicy, super-glossy lips are another trend that’s easy to try. Try Smart Cover’s lip products to make your lips irresistibly kissable and ready to take on the spring!

Men and Smart Cover

When you hear the word “cosmetic,” you tend to think of makeup, of course, and women wanting to look their very best. Indeed, women in the United States and across the globe love Smart Cover Cosmetics because of our signature products, like the Concealing Crème, and our popular kits, like the Hollywood Makeup Artist kit. If you’re a “girly girl,” you can have a great time experimenting with our diverse product line.

But Smart Cover Cosmetics has a deeper mission than that. As pioneers of the camouflage cosmetics industry, Flori and I have sought to help people with serious skin issues face the world with a renewed sense of confidence and well being. For chronic acne sufferers, people with melasma, vitiligo, psoriasis, port wine birthmarks, and other skin afflictions, ordinary makeup was virtually useless.

And the reality is, it’s not just women who deal with the self-consciousness that can accompany having a prominent scar or skin discoloration. For a man with vitiligo, for example, the syndrome is compounded by the societal expectation that a man shouldn’t care how he looks, and certainly shouldn’t be buying any kind of cosmetic product. This, of course, is nonsense, and Smart Cover is proud to have a client base of men whose outlooks have been transformed by finally having a product that provides complete coverage of their skin issues (when they want to  cover it), with a simple application process and a product that won’t come off at inopportune times.

If you’re a man hiding a scar or a large birthmark, you can apply the Perfect Touch Camouflage Creme or Smart Cover Concealing Crème, and rest assured that going for a swim won’t wash off the product. Smart Cover stays on until you’re ready to take it off. It’s another instrument in your toolbox to help you face the world head-on!

What It Really Takes to Be “Naturally Pretty”

Comedian and actress Amy Schumer famously spoofed the cliché about men preferring women without makeup, until they actually see a woman without makeup! You know the old joke: it takes twenty minutes of makeup application to achieve the “natural” look. It’s the idea that what men actually want is a woman who magically wakes up looking perfect, no effort required, along the same lines of men wanting a woman who can inhale a cheeseburger and fries and still wear a size “0.”

This trope is unfair to both the women being held to these absurd expectations, and to the men who insist that they are more evolved than this cliché would suggest. In 2018, men and women are sharing responsibilities like childcare and housework, while contributing as equally as their respective incomes allow to their family finances. Furthermore, there are plenty of men who care about how they look as much as their female counterparts do.

If you happen to be someone who does not wake up looking flawless, it’s easier than ever to fake it. In less time than it takes to brush your teeth, you can hide dark eye circles and other skin imperfections with the Smart Cover Stick; and with Smart Cover’s Believable Bronzer, you can recreate the warm glow of an afternoon spent soaking up the sun.

Not even supermodels wake up looking perfect (usually), and it’s unhelpful to hold ourselves up to impossible standards. Yet, it’s equally important to give yourself permission to look how you want, whether it’s the glamorous look that can only be achieved with a complete “beauty toolbox” like Smart Cover’s Hollywood Makeup Artist Kit, or the more laidback “naturally pretty” look. Smart Cover can help you either way. No matter what, the most important thing to remember is that you are already perfect.

The Emotional Impact of Acne

Often dismissed as an adolescent rite of passage, acne is a virtually lifelong affliction for many adults. Some acne treatments are inexpensive and easily purchased from your local drugstores, like many popular topical solutions. However, those treatments only offer limited results, and even those results are short-term.

Some women find relief from prescribed birth control medication, which can regulate the hormones that cause acne. Isotretinoin, better known by the brand name Accutane, is sometimes prescribed to patients with severe acne, though it is contraindicated for women who may become pregnant, as it causes birth defects. Lesser side effects can include dryness of the skin, eyes and mucous membranes.

For those fortunate enough not to know the daily anguish of living with acne, it is easy to wonder why people would pay so much money and endure uncomfortable side effects just to get rid of “a few pimples.” However, the desire to be rid of acne, understandable in and of itself, is not a matter of simple vanity. Research has found that there is a direct correlation between acne and depression.

“Over the 15-year study period, the probability of developing major depression was 18.5 percent among patients with acne and 12 percent in those without,” according to Nicholas Bakalar of The New York Times. The risk for acne-related depression is at its highest within the first five years of diagnosis.

Many people are reluctant to give themselves permission to spend money on skincare and cosmetics, seeing it as a superficial indulgence. However, scientific research has concluded that there is a definitive link between one’s mental health and the health one’s skin. Noncomedogenic concealers, like Smart Cover Concealing Creme, and high-quality makeup removers that also cleanse and condition the skin, are not just a way to take care of your skin; they’re a way to take care of you.

You’re Getting Sleepy…

Most of us have smartphones that help us do all kinds of things, like navigate an unfamiliar drive, download and listen to new music whenever we like, take pictures and videos, and oh yes—make phone calls! Some of us have robot vacuums that clean the floors for us while a microwave makes us dinner and a digital video recorder tapes our favorite television shows for us to watch at our convenience.

It seems like, these days, virtually every aspect of our lives can be automated, outsourced to the latest electronic device. But when it comes to self-care, there are certain things that we just have to do for ourselves. One of those things is sleep. No matter how technologically savvy you may be, there’s no shortcut for proper rest.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, 75% of a complete night’s sleep consists of Non-Rapid Eye Movement, or NREM. This is the most restorative portion of the night. Blood supply to the muscles is increased, hormones that contribute to growth and development are released, and tissue repair takes place.

As Stephanie Jacob writes for WebMD, the increased blood flow to your skin that occurs during this stage of sleep is the key to a glowing complexion. The growth hormones that are released boost the creation of collagen, which reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

If you’re able to get your doctor-recommended seven to nine hours of sleep, you’ll notice the difference in your appearance within a few short weeks. Your skin will be brighter and clearer, your cheeks and lips will be rosier, and the circles under your eyes will be diminished. The Smart Cover Stick hides dark eye circles in seconds, and the Two-in-One Glow Stick will give your lips and cheeks a shimmery rosy glow… but your most important beauty tool will always be a good night’s sleep.

Summer Skin for the Win

Woman caring of her beautiful skin on the face standing near mirror in the bathroomThe rules for skincare vary with the changing seasons. Now that we’re in the thick of a hot and humid summer, you’re probably noticing that your skin is oilier than usual. This is because “heat increases sebum production,” according to Justaboutskin.com. Experts recommend using an alcohol-free toner in addition to your usual cleanser. Smart Cover’s Makeup Remover/Cleanser gently takes off all your makeup and thoroughly cleanses your skin without over-drying it.

Exfoliating your skin once or twice a week can also go a long way toward keeping your pores from getting overly enlarged with oil, plus ridding your skin of all those dead cells will leave you looking radiant. “AHAs and enzymes are far more effective at exfoliating skin than physical scrubs,” claim the experts at Justaboutskin.com, and you want to avoid needlessly harsh and abrasive scrubs containing large particles, especially on your face.

Makeup trends tend to be more relaxed and carefree in the summer, but if you are using concealers, stick to the noncomedogenic variety, which just means that it won’t clog your pores. Smart Cover’s waterproof Concealing Crème can cover skin imperfections on your face and body, and you guessed it, it’s noncomedogenic! Though the pigmentation of Smart Cover’s concealers has some sun-protecting properties, never go out without applying an SPF of 30 or higher.

“About one ounce (a shot glass full for your entire body) of sunscreen should be reapplied two or three times a day,” recommends the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and don’t forget that you can get sunburned on cloudy days too. Be vigilant about any changes to your skin, such as suspicious looking moles and any discolorations, and be sure to let your dermatologist know if you notice anything unusual. Wherever your adventures take you this summer, take care of yourself… and take along your Smart Cover!
