What is Lupus?

“Since wearing Smart Cover, my confidence has since then been restored and I can go out without the worries of being judged because of my unattractive red blotches.”

According to The National Institutes of Health, Lupus is when something goes wrong with your immune system and it attacks healthy cells and tissues. This can damage many parts of the body such as joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood vessels and the brain. There are many kinds of lupus, the most common type being systemic lupus erythematosus, which affects many parts of the body that are mentioned above.

This chronic disease can have common symptoms including joint and muscle pain, fatigue, fever with no known cause, skin rashes, swollen glands, chest pain, unusual hair loss, and sensitivity to sunlight.

Anyone can get lupus, but it most often affects women. Lupus is also more common in women of African American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American descent. The onset of lupus occurs most often in people 20-40 years old but can happen at any age. Women outnumber male patients ten to one. Research suggests that genes play an important role, but genes alone do not determine who gets lupus. Many who suffer from lupus are keen to know when any warning signs of flare-ups occur. There are many specialists who can treat the flares-ups when they to reduce organ damage and damage to joints.

It is also important to find ways to cope with the stress of having lupus. Exercising and finding ways to relax may making coping easier. Many people with lupus have found support groups to be very useful. Besides providing support, taking part in a support group can make you feel better about yourself and help you to keep a good outlook. Smart Cover Cosmetics has worked with the Lupus Alliance of LIQ (Long Island, Queens, New York.)  They have been helping those afflicted with Lupus and their families since 1955. If you want to find a support group near you, Lupus. org will help you find one.

Smart Cover’s concealing cremes help women cover lupus related skin rashes (butterfly rash), discoloration or scarring that can occur from the flare-ups. It also has the ingredient titanium dioxide to give you extra protection while you are out in the sun. (We always recommend you use sunscreen first.)

Vitiligo Awareness

Vitiligo According to the American Academy of Dermatology, Vitiligo (vit-uh-lie-go) causes the skin to lose color. Patches of lighter skin appear. Some people develop a few patches. Others lose much more skin color. Vitiligo usually affects the skin, but it can develop anywhere we have pigment. Patches of hair can turn white. Some people lose color inside their mouths. Even an eye can lose some of its color. People of all races and ethnicities can get vitiligo.

Vitiligo is not contagious. It is not life-threatening. But, vitiligo can be life-altering. Some people develop low self-esteem. They may no longer want to hang out with friends and or develop serious depression. Most people have vitiligo for life, so it’s important to develop coping strategies.

Smart Cover’s found that there are many resources of outreach for people affected with Vitiligo.  One resource is the Vitiligo Bond, Inc (VBI) which launched a new initiative, “Vitiligo Self Esteem Fashion Shoot,” as part of its commitment to promote self-esteem in youth and young adults who have vitiligo.  The first photo shoot was held on September 25th, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia with fashion companies such as House of Van Miller and Vintage Man. For Vitiligo Make-Up to cover their hypo-pigmentation, the models wore Smart Cover’s Camouflage Make-Up  to give their skin a natural looking appearance.

VitiligoAccording to VBI CEO & Founder Natasha Pierre McCarthy, they are encouraging youth and adults to come on out and gain exposure to the world of fashion; get dressed up, strike a pose, and shine. Through the platform of social media, VBI continues the project of encouraging their members to share photos, videos, and stories of their lives enjoying favorite activities to inspire people with vitiligo across the country to be strong, confident, and unstoppable.

Here’s what some Vitiligo Bond Members have to say about Smart Cover:

“I use the Smart Cover make up and loved the cover I get.   The color lasts for about twelve hours.   It gives my skin a rich brown tone and looks great throughout.  I will recommend it to anyone who wants a finished even tone.”

“Thank you for sharing the item with me.  I will continue to use it.  I feel as if I have found the Smart Cover color I was looking for.”

Anti-Aging Treatments for Baby Boomers!

Sandra Day
Sandra Day Clinical Aesthetician, NeoDerm Aesthetics

Baby Boomers are considered those born Post World War II era between 1945 and 1964. There are over 76 million Baby Boomers including actresses Julianne Moore, Angela Bassett and Sandra Bullock. This segment of the population care about their appearance and want to keep looking youthful giving a boom to many anti-aging treatments and skin care products. Now ranging in age from 50 to 70 (many have already reached retirement) these women are seeking many solutions to staying younger looking. There are many new non-invasive procedures to help minimize the visible signs of aging such as wrinkles, deep furrows and lip lines.

According to Aesthetician and Baby Boomer Sandra Day, Micro-Needling is the newest breakthrough in anti-aging treatments.  This procedure stimulates your skin’s natural ability to heal itself to reverse years of sun damage, improve scars, and minimize wrinkles – all with little or no downtime.  Perfect for Baby Boomers!  Micro-needling accelerates this repair process by creating microscopic channels, which also allow the appropriate topical products, such as hyaluronic acid, to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin.  It is remarkably effective for scars (acne, surgical, trauma, chicken pox), wrinkles, sun damage, uneven skin tone, large pores and thin skin.  Our many clients who have micro-needling treatments are amazed at the rejuvenated appearance of their skin and how it makes them feel and look younger.

The use of injectibles such as Botox and Radiesse is another way that Sandra recommends to minimize laugh lines, frown lines, deep furrows and other signs of aging skin.  Since redness and some bruising may occur, the Smart Cover Stick which is highly pigmented can give you targeted coverage you need until the redness and bruising subside.

The daily use of effective skin care products is paramount in maintaining healthy, more youthful appearing skin.  Sandra says “Read the ingredients list – look for free radical fighting antioxidants (such as topical Vitamin C, Vitamin E, idebenone, coffeeberry, among many others).” Smart Cover’s Vitamin Beauty Stick has three of these ingredients to help diminish fine lines around the lips and eyes. The convenient Stick form is portable and easy to use.

Baby Boomer women think and act younger than their years and want to look that way too! They have learned that when wearing make-up, less is better than more as your skin ages and it’s best to look natural.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Pink Ribbon

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that can grow into (invade) surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. The disease occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get it, too. They recommend yearly mammograms starting at age 40 and continuing for as long as a woman is in good health, clinical breast exam (CBE) about every 3 years for women in their 20s and 30s and every year for women 40 and over. Physicians feel that women should know how their breasts normally look and feel and report any breast changes to a health care provider right away. Less than 15% of women with breast cancer have a family member with this disease. This means that most (over 85%) women who get breast cancer do not have a family history of this disease.

Smart Cover’s Camouflage Cosmetics work for many customers who are going through Chemo and Radiation drug therapies for their cancer treatments. Some customers experience hyperpigmentation which causes darkening of the skin. These blotchy areas can be found on the face or around the veins where the IV is administered. Our Smart Cover Concealing Crème’s highly pigmented formula helps hide the discoloration and gives the skin an all over natural look. The waterproof Concealing Crème can also be used as a scar concealer to help cover the scarring, redness and bruising that can often occur after post-surgical procedures. Smart Cover is dermatologist tested, allergy-tested, long lasting and fragrance free.

The American Cancer Society also offers a program called the The National Cancer Information Center that provides information and support to those facing cancer 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Trained cancer information specialists are available via phone, email or live chat, providing accurate, up to date cancer information to patients, family members, and caregivers and connecting them with valuable services, help remove any obstacles in getting treatments and finding resources in their communities. The toll free number is 1.800.227.2345.

Chemical Peel Appeal

Chemical Peels offer a non-surgical approach to help with aging skin. Commonly used peels are Glycolic Acid based which is a natural product derived from sugar cane and is great for exfoliation and moisturizing the skin, while stimulating new cells.

These new cells reveal smoother, brighter, younger looking skin. Peels can help reduce fine lines under the eyes, around the mouth, and help with wrinkles caused by sun damage. Peels also help improve mild scars, reduce age spots, freckles, and dark patches (melasma) due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills.

Age SpotsOur customer Deana recently called from Florida telling us how she has been getting Chemical Peels periodically to keep her 50+ skin looking younger. However, her aesthetician suggested they increase the peel to 70% and it was too strong for her skin type and she had a negative reaction. She raved about how Smart Cover’s Camouflage Make up helped cover the severe red spots and sent us this before and after photo. She was so grateful for her best concealer so that she could return to work without worrying that people were staring at her forehead.

We asked Aesthetician Andrea Neubart, who has been a professional in the skin care field for over 20 years for some helpful tips.

Andrea says, ” I always begin with a consultation with my clients to learn more about their goals, lifestyle and skin condition.  Does she have time to follow up with more peels and follow close attention to home care? Is the skin thin or thick? What about sensitivity and will they stay out of the sun and wear higher sunblock? All depending on these answers it’s best to start with a low Glycolic %.”

How many treatments does one need?

According to Andrea, “Sometimes one peel is all you need depending on the goals and what type of peel treatment are they looking for.  We now have peels with a mix of ingredients to help with several issues such as lightening, firming, and wrinkle reduction. For more information, you can research some of the most popular peels now out on the professional markets: Obagi, VIP peels, Mediderma Peels by Sesderma Laboratories that are sold to medical offices.”

Don’t Forget to Keep Wearing Sunscreen Every Day!

Now that fall is here, you’re probably thinking that you don’t need to wear sunscreen.  Did you know that you can still get harmful rays from the sun even on cloudy days?

With more than a million cases of skin cancer diagnosed in the United States each year, everyone under the sun — from beach beauties to snow bunnies — must practice safe sun strategies and wear sunscreen year-round.

When it comes to staying safe from the sun’s rays, knowledge is power. Know the facts about how to protect your skin and you’ll be less likely to face wrinkles, brown spots, and skin cancer. For starters, good sun protection isn’t just about avoiding direct sunlight or hot summer sun. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), up to 80 percent of ultraviolet rays can pass through clouds or is reflected off snow. Another surprising bit of info: Just because you’re indoors doesn’t mean the sun can’t find you — window glass blocks the UVB light that causes sunburns, but cell-damaging UVA rays still penetrate. The bottom line: Sunscreen is a must, indoors or out, year-round, every day.

One quick tip when using sunscreen is to check the expiration date. The FDA requires that sunscreens remain effective for at least three years, so that’s how long you can expect yours to work at full strength. When in doubt, toss it out.

It’s also important to get annual skin checks with your dermatologist. And, if  you notice any changes in your moles or any new growths or lesions you must alert them as soon as possible. Caught early, most skin cancers are highly treatable.

Wearing sunscreen every day under any professional make-up is a must. Even though Smart Cover’s camouflage makeup has titanium dioxide in it’s formula, we still recommend to our customers to always apply sunscreen first.

We came across this informative article on wearing sunscreen from Artisan-57 Skin and Laser Center. They use the acronym S.M.A.R.T. (we couldn’t resist) as a way to remember using sunscreen as part of your daily skincare routine.
