Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Smart Cover!

There is no right or wrong way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. In fact, some playful singletons choose instead to throw Anti-Valentine’s Day parties! Eschewing the time-honored chocolates, flowers and romance associated with the 14th of February, they instead celebrate platonic friendship, independence and snarky fun.

Though it may seem bitter or needlessly gloomy in spirit, writer Amy Sowder offers another perspective on the Anti-Valentine’s Day trend. “Like a divorce party, this is a healthy, yet not-so-healthy-it’s-lame, way to celebrate your loss or lack of romantic love.” Anti-Valentine’s Day has become so popular that urban hubs like New York City now offer a number of special events geared specifically to singles and Anti-Valentine’s Day revelers.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day Your Way!

If you’re more of a traditionalist, don’t worry. It’s still cool to celebrate Valentine’s Day the old-fashioned way! Detractors often talk about the commercialism around Valentine’s Day, and it is a billion-dollar industry, but you don’t have to spend big bucks to show your love.

A quiet meal at home, a bouquet of flowers plucked from your backyard garden, and a handwritten note can be a lot more powerful than a dozen overpriced roses and an expensive dinner in a crowded restaurant. Don’t be afraid to be creative. Your significant other will love you for it!

It feels good to look good whether you’re satisfied and single or pleasantly partnered. This year, Smart Cover invites you to celebrate Valentine’s Day by giving yourself a gift! The Deluxe 10 Piece Starter Kit comes with Concealing Crème, the Smart Cover Stick, the Two-in-One Glowstick and other items to hide your flaws and bring out your beauty. Valentine’s Day often focuses on our love for others, romantic and otherwise. But as a wise person once said, loving yourself is “the greatest love of all!”

Get Ready for Super Bowl Sunday with Smart Cover!

Are you ready for Super Bowl Sunday? You’ve got a large flat-screen TV, a jersey so your team will feel you rooting for them from home, and enough snacks to feed, well, a football team. You might think you’re ready for the big game but what about your makeup game?

Smart Cover Has Just What You Need to Get Ready for Super Bowl Sunday!

Sure, it’s a casual vibe but it’s still a social occasion and you want to look great without trying too hard. Give those stiff jeans a rest and look comfortably chic with a cute pair of sweatpants.  As fashion blogger Sarah Barnes notes, “These loose-fitting casual staples have come a long way since gym class, making them totally appropriate to sport out and about.”

This is also the perfect opportunity to sport—er, no pun intended– your no-makeup makeup look. As Rio Viera-Newton writes for newyorkmag.com, this look is ideal for days “when you just want to look pretty and fresh without it being obvious that you’ve spent an hour on your makeup.”

Here’s how to be ready for Super Bowl Sunday in a few easy steps! After moisturizing, apply Smart Cover’s Moisture Primer Lotion so your makeup will look its best and stay put all day long. Use the Smart Cover Stick under your eyes to hide dark eye circles. It also covers blemishes and other facial flaws in seconds.

Smart Cover Camouflage Crème will give your face a smooth, creamy finish and the Two-in-One Glow Stick will give your lips and cheeks just the right hint of color and shine. If you feel naked without eyeliner, a simple cat-eye with liquid liner will bring out your eyes without being too over-the-top. Curl your eyelashes, swipe on some mascara and you’ll look like a naturally beautiful sports fan!

Top 5 Ways to Love Your Winter Skin

We’re a third of the way through winter and your skin may be feeling the effects. Here are Smart Cover’s top 5 ways to love your winter skin!

Too much hot water is drying to the skin, so beware those long, hot showers. What is great for your skin, however, is steam! It opens up your pores and boosts circulation. You can buy at-home facial sauna systems for under 30 dollars, or you can make your own for free. Just lean over a bowl of hot water for 15 minutes, with your face about a foot away from the bowl. Pat your face dry and moisturize.

The sun shines all year round, even if it doesn’t quite feel like it. That means you can’t slack off on applying sunblock every day. Use a moisturizer during the day that contains SPF 15 or more, and don’t forget your sunglasses when you go outside!

Love Your Winter Skin

There’s never a good time to fall asleep wearing makeup and winter is no exception. Use Smart Cover’s Makeup Remover and Cleanser to take off all your makeup without over-drying your skin.

After you wash your face, apply a moisturizer with antioxidants before bed. Antioxidants fight free radicals and help keep your skin looking young. Makeup.com explains: “Free radicals can damage the skin by trying to grab an extra electron from atoms in the skin. When atoms are taken away from molecules in the skin, it causes damage to our skin’s DNA that can speed along skin aging.”

Your skin tends to be dry in the winter, making it easier for foundation to seep into the cracks and instantly age you. Applying Smart Cover’s Moisture Primer Lotion before your concealer will give your makeup a smooth, even surface to “stick to,” and it’ll last longer and look better.

Love your winter skin with these tips from Smart Cover and you’ll cruise right into spring!

How to Wear Makeup with Glasses, Smart Cover Style!

If you happen to be among the 65% of the population who wears corrective lenses, then we’ve got some tips for looking fabulous when you wear makeup with glasses. Contact lenses are great, but they’re not for everyone. And even if you do have contacts, some days you might just feel like wearing your glasses for a change. Here are five surefire ways to look gorgeous when you wear makeup with glasses.

Apply mascara to your top lashes but skip the bottom lashes. According to beauty writer Augusta Falletta, “The dark lashes on the bottom plus your frames can cast a shadow on an already dark part of your face, making you look tired.”

You may think you can skimp on the under-eye concealer when you have your glasses on, but actually the opposite is true! As Cosmo‘s Brooke Shunatona advises, “The lenses can actually magnify the circles and make them more obvious.” Try the Smart Cover Stick to hide veins and dark shadows under your eyes. It takes seconds to apply, rolling on just like lipstick.

Look Amazing When You Wear Makeup with Glasses!

Eye shadow can be a little too overwhelming when you wear glasses, so instead accentuate your eyes with eyeliner.

Go for a bold lip, like matte red or a deep, rich burgundy. You want your eye makeup to be a little bit more understated when you’re wearing glasses, but don’t be afraid to make your lips stand out!

Keeping your blemishes and other skin imperfections completely covered is key when you wear makeup with glasses. You want your stylish look—not your skin flaws—to capture everyone’s attention. Smart Cover Camouflage Crème will hide skin concerns, including the red dents on your nose that your glasses can sometimes cause. Keep your face shine-free with the Compact Finishing Powder and rock those specs!

Is Your Face in Good Shape?

It’s the start of another new year and gym memberships are currently surging. This is when everyone wants to start fresh and finally become the best version of themselves. They also may want to work off the holiday sweets they’ve been enjoying since Thanksgiving! Going to the gym will get your body in better shape, but is your face in good shape?

Sweets, cold weather and plain old neglect can wreak havoc on the skin. Sugar can destroy the elasticity in your skin and cause you to break out. Going from the drying heat of the indoors to the frigid air outside can dehydrate your skin, which can break down collagen and cause wrinkles. The long winter months can make some people feel tired, or even a little depressed, which can make you a little more careless about your skincare.

Getting Your Face in Good Shape

Some people worry that running and other high-impact exercises will cause aging. In fact, a character on the hit show Ally McBeal had a unique solution to keeping her face in good shape. The character Elaine Vassal, played brilliantly by Jane Krakowski, invented a “face bra” to mitigate the effects of jogging on her face. It turns out that running and other kinds of cardiovascular exercise are actually good for your skin, because they boost circulation and immunity. In real life, the best way to keep your face in good shape is by following some simple skincare rules.

Take off your makeup every night! Smart Cover Makeup Remover and Cleanser takes everything off without over-drying your skin. Moisturize every day and remember that you need sun protection even in the winter. Smile as often as possible. It’ll help you to keep your face in good shape and you just might make some new friends!

Smart Cover Remembers Penny Marshall

We lost a Hollywood legend and a pioneer in the film industry when Penny Marshall died this past week. Most of the world remembers Penny Marshall as one half of the iconic sitcom duo Laverne & Shirley, with Marshall playing Laverne DeFazio, of course. Alongside costar Cindy Williams playing Shirley Feeney, Marshall won America over with her sassy attitude and signature monogrammed sweaters.

Smart Cover Remembers Penny Marshall

Garry Marshall, Penny’s older brother, co-created The Odd Couple, a television series adapted from the play. He cast her as Myrna Turner and she quickly became a fan favorite. However, the real magic happened on the Garry Marshall series Happy Days, where Penny Marshall was paired with Cindy Williams. They played Fonzie and Richie’s blind dates, Laverne and Shirley, in an episode so hilarious that they eventually got their own eponymous spinoff.

The younger generation, born well after Laverne & Shirley went off the air, likely remembers Penny Marshall as an accomplished film director. In an industry dominated by men even to this day, Marshall was an anomaly. She directed hugely successful films, including Big, The Preacher’s Wife and A League of Their Own. The latter was a beautiful paean to a unique moment in history when women had an opportunity to show what kind of magic they were capable of making, even in the hardest circumstances. The message of the film is itself a wonderful metaphor for Penny Marshall’s career.

Marshall’s Laverne DeFazio was the ultimate best friend and girl next door, like many of our most loyal Smart Cover customers. The next time you put on Smart Cover Camouflage Crème or apply the Two-in-One Glowstick to your lips and cheeks before heading out for a misadventure with your bestie, give a little shout-out to Laverne… and maybe throw on a monogrammed sweater!

Different Is Beautiful

Port Wine Birthmark

Port Wine Birthmark with Smart Cover Concealing Creme

The popular website Cafemom.com recently featured an unnamed contributor who wrote a beautiful article about living with a physical difference.

“I was born with a port-wine stain birthmark that covers half my face, which travels all the way to my brain (causing another condition called Sturge-Weber syndrome) and caused my facial features to be asymmetrical.”

She goes on to offer a few words of wisdom to other people who might have a noticeable physical difference like herself. The author advises them to remember that they have a voice, and they “can change the world.” Not everyone has the same experience of living with a physical difference. Some have a hard time with it; some are ambivalent; some absolutely love the traits that set them apart. After all, different is beautiful!

For those who have occasional moments of struggle, the writer reminds them that their condition doesn’t define them and they are not alone. For instance, one in ten newborns are born with some kind of vascular birthmark, of which one type is the port-wine birthmark like this writer.  She also emphasizes that decisions about one’s health and appearance are up to them. You know best what’s right for you.

Different Is Beautiful

Smart Cover Cosmetics is proud to be a pioneer of camouflage cosmetics. Our Concealing Crème hides port-wine birthmarks and other skin issues that ordinary makeup can’t cover. As our brand ambassador and model Serena Leroy can tell you, sometimes opting not to cover your birthmark is the most empowering choice you can make.

If you have a birthmark or any other physical trait that makes you feel different, the gifted writer from the Cafemom website has a few sage words for you: “If you’re a girl, remember, you are beautiful and stunning. If you’re a guy? You are handsome with tons of swag.”

Is There A Secret to Shrinking Pores?

Supermodels always seem to have perfectly smooth, creamy skin, thanks to a combination of genetics, makeup artistry and the magic of photo editing. Meanwhile, the rest of us sit at home with our magnifying mirrors and all we see are enormous pores! But is there really a secret to shrinking pores?

The experts say, yes and no. The size of your pores is mainly determined by your genetics, according to Helen Sanders of healthambition.com. “Darker skin tones generally have larger pores than lighter ones and those with dry skin tend to have the smallest pores of all as they don’t produce much oil.” But there’s plenty you can do to improve the appearance of your pores.

The Secret to Shrinking Pores

Pores can become enlarged when they get clogged with dirt, grease and leftover makeup, so wash your face with a gentle cleanser every night before bed. Smart Cover’s Makeup Remover and Cleanser will take off all your makeup and leave your face clean and fresh without over-drying your skin.

Sam Escobar of goodhousekeeping.com warns never to skip your sunscreen. UV radiation breaks down the elastin and collagen in your skin, which will make your pores expand. It’s also important to moisturize daily and keep hydrated.

For more advanced measures, talk to your dermatologist. She may recommend that you try retinol, which increases cell turnover in your skin. Laser treatments are also very effective, but at around $300 a session, this is not a cheap option.

The right makeup can create the illusion of invisible pores without a doctor’s appointment. Use Smart Cover Moisture Primer Lotion before your foundation. It’ll create a smooth surface for your makeup and help it to stay put longer. Smart Cover Camouflage Crème will hide skin concerns, including large pores, and give you the flawless, creamy complexion you’ve always wanted!
