Shades of You

Depositphotos_70564945_l-2015As beauty blogger Diana Crisan warns for Makeup.com, using the wrong shade of makeup for your skin “throws your whole look off!”

If you don’t know your Medium Beige from your Golden Tan, we have many ways to help you! First, determine whether you’re looking for a Concealing Crème (which dries to a matte finish and can be used on the face and body), or a Perfect Touch Camouflage Crème (formulated just for the face, dries to a creamy finish).

If you choose Concealing Crème, we highly recommend the Deluxe 10-Piece Starter Kit for first-time customers. Not only will you get three shades to choose from, but you also get our Color Corrector, which can be mixed with any shade to lighten it.
Makeup experts recommend swiping all three shades on your jawline and looking at them in natural sunlight to see which one comes closest to your own skin tone. This video, featuring makeup artist Andrea Guttadauro, can also guide you to the shade that will work best for you.
Some people find that mixing two shades, such as the Medium Beige and the Dark Beige, gets them the custom match they need. Smart Cover is dermatologist tested and works great with most skin types. It also offers a level of coverage you just can’t get from ordinary cosmetics. It feels wonderful to find just the right makeup to give you the look of beautiful, perfect skin. Smart Cover hides your flaws and lets you shine!

Miracle Foods to Look Ten Years Younger!

A multi generation portrait of a happy grandmother with her daughter and granddaughterThe right diet really can turn back the hands of time, according to Board-Certified plastic surgeon and anti-aging expert Anthony Youn, MD. In his new book, The Age Fix: A Leading Plastic Surgeon Reveals How to Really Look 10 Years Younger, Dr. Youn shares the best foods for keeping your skin smooth, firm and wrinkle-free. Here are just a few…

Eggs – A great (and inexpensive!) source of lean protein as well as vitamin A, eggs help your skin retain its elasticity.

Shrimp and Oysters – We hope you love seafood! Oysters are full of zinc and shrimp is packed with vitamin E, which can reduce scarring and help reverse skin damage.

Sweet potatoes – We all know sweet potatoes are rich in beta carotene, a precursor of vitamin A that helps your skin retain moisture and promotes the health of your eyes and the strength of your immune system. Sweet potatoes also contain selenium, which can reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Tomato paste – If fresh tomatoes aren’t in season, you can always get a good dose of lycopene from about five tablespoons of tomato paste. Lycopene helps fight signs of aging with its anti-inflammatory properties.

Papaya – This colorful fruit is an anti-aging triple threat! Packed with vitamins E, C and beta carotene, it helps keep your skin looking young and dewy. (Smart Cover’s Vitamin Beauty Stick is enriched with antioxidants and vitamins A, C and E to nourish the delicate eye area.)

Green tea – Try getting your daily caffeine fix from green tea instead of coffee and you’ll get a big dose of antioxidants too, which combat signs of aging.

While you’re cleaning out your refrigerator to make room for all these new additions to your diet, try Smart Cover’s Anti-Aging Pick Up Sticks Collection, which includes the Anti-Feathering Stick, designed to prevent bleeding lipstick; the Lip Plumper; the Lip Pumice Stick to exfoliate the lips; the Tea Tree Oil Softening Stick to moisturize; and the Two-in-One Glow Stick, which is a lip gloss and cream blush in one, giving your lips and cheeks a hint of color.

Fight aging from the inside out with the right foods, as recommended by Dr. Youn. And fight aging from the outside in with Smart Cover!

Eye Wrinkle Relief

Beautiful polished 40 year old woman.Primewomen.com is a fabulous website geared toward “redefining women over 50” with articles about relationships, health, fashion, beauty and more. One piece in particular, authored by Board-Certified Dermatologist Rebecca Euwer, addressed one of our favorite topics: eye wrinkles!

There are plenty of products on the market that promise to eliminate wrinkles around the eyes, but according to Dr. Euwer, “nothing beats the neuromodulators.”

What is a neuromodulator? You may know it as botulinum toxin, or by one of its brand names, Botox. Eye wrinkles are caused in part by the repeated use of facial muscles, which form a groove beneath the surface of the skin. The neuromodulator transmits signals to those muscles to relax, which smooths out the already-formed wrinkle and helps stop new wrinkles from forming.

The procedure is not completely painless. The neuromodulator must be injected by needle directly into the delicate area around the eyes, but it is over in minutes and the effects last up to four or five months in most cases. Botox is the most recognizable one, but there are several neuromodulators on the market that work just as well.

Dr. Euwer wisely advises to choose the least expensive brand offered by your doctor’s office, but when it comes to having botulinum toxin injected into your face, a Board-Certified dermatologist who specializes in the use of neuromodulators to treat wrinkles is your best bet.

You can resume normal activities immediately after your injections, though there may be some redness around the affected area. In rarer cases, there may be some mild bruising. It is safe to apply makeup right after the procedure, and Smart Cover’s Perfect Touch Camouflage Crème will hide any discoloration as your face is healing.

Though some people worry about looking “frozen,” or not being able to emote like a normal person (think reality stars who cry their eyes out while still seeming to smile eerily), it all comes down to who performs the procedure. A qualified doctor will be able to place the injections so that your wrinkles disappear without making you look unnatural.

You still want to look like you, after all. Now there are more ways than ever to look your best for years to come!

Men Want to Look Good Too!

Women are known for investing a great deal of energy and time in their appearances and with good reason: by and large, women are judged by society based on how young, thin and pretty they are, even in ostensibly professional arenas where such things shouldn’t matter. Because of this, many people assume that since men are not subjected to the same type of scrutiny, they must not ever give their looks a second thought.

This is simply not true! Dr. Susan Weinkle, a Board Certified dermatologist who has been featured in Smart Cover’s “Doctor’s Corner,” has stated that 10% of her male patients come to her for Botox treatments.  Dr. Weinkle also performs Kybella injectables on her male patients to remove the troublesome double chin. It take about 3-5 sessions and you see results within 4-6 weeks.

Described by its manufacturer as “a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown of dietary fat,” Kybella is a non-invasive way of eliminating chin fat, and restoring a youthful, manly appearance to the jawline. This is ideal for men who want to look as young and virile on the outside as they feel on the inside, without actually having to go for more invasive procedures.

Nonetheless, there are plenty of men willing to explore the many surgical options that are now available to improve or preserve their looks. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, men are seeking out cosmetic surgery in record numbers. In 2015 alone, men underwent 1.2 million cosmetic procedures, both surgical and nonsurgical.

For guys who are not quite ready to head to the dermatologist or surgery center but still want to look young, energetic and handsome, Smart Cover’s Perfect Touch Camouflage Crème hides fine lines, wrinkles, dark eye circles, age spots, scars and other facial imperfections.

Men and women alike want to feel great about themselves. If the reflection in the mirror isn’t quite living up to the “Real You” in your mind’s eye, Smart Cover is here for you!

Tired of Looking Tired? Combating Dark Eye Circles

“Look at the circles under my eyes! I haven’t slept in weeks!” – Cowardly Lion

Cowardly Lion

For some people, dark circles under the eyes are just an unfortunate hereditary trait. For others, dark eye circles are caused by lack of sleep, poor diet and the inevitable aging process.

To reduce the appearance of dark eye circles from the inside, here are some suggestions:

Increase your intake of antioxidants and vitamins such as Vitamin K and Vitamin B12. Leafy green vegetables and fruits like blueberries are a great way to get these nutrients.

Treat your allergies. Hay fever can have you constantly rubbing your eyes, which wears away at the delicate skin, making dark circles even worse. Also, allergies can cause breathing issues while you sleep, leading to inadequate rest… and yes, dark eye circles.

Get some sleep. Most people need seven to nine consecutive hours of sleep to be fully rested and start to see a difference in the appearance of under-eye circles.

Avoid sugar… or at least try consuming less of it. Most of us can’t resist a little treat every now and then, but be careful not to let dessert become a major food group in your diet.

Don’t smoke! We don’t really need to say anything more, do we?

Reduce alcohol consumption. One glass of red wine with dinner can be good for you; one bottle is another matter entirely. As in all things, moderation is the key.

Watch your breath. Some people, especially those prone to anxiety, suffer from Hyperventilation Syndrome. This simply means that you’re taking in more air than your body can handle. Be mindful of breathing slowly and deeply. Yoga can help you to become more conscious and deliberate in your breathing.

It goes on creamy and blends easily. Our Smart Cover Stick also hides dark eye circles and other facial flaws with a no-muss no-fuss application (it rolls on just like lipstick).

SKIN CARE IN YOUR 70’S, 80’s AND BEYOND

Now is the time to enjoy your looks, feel good about your appearance; and above all, stay active. Subtle changes are what it’s all about!

Here’s more advice from our experts:

Use a rich moisturizer and sunscreen every day whether you are wearing makeup or not.

You don’t want to wear a heavy makeup that accentuates the wrinkles, so we suggest mixing Smart Cover’s  Perfect Touch Camouflage Crème with your own foundation so that you get the coverage that age spots may require, but still look very natural. Perfect Touch is a favorite of Actress Gena Rowlands.

Use a cream or powder blush that easily blends into your cheeks in soft mauve or rose.

Try a matte lipstick in the rose family and stay away from dark brown shades.

Keep your eye makeup simple; define your eyebrows as needed. Apply a heather colored pencil and smudge out the edges.

Above all, less is better than more when you get to be at a certain age.

Skin Care Series from your 40’s through your 80’s and Beyond

TAKING CARE OF YOUR SKIN IN YOUR 60’S

healthy senior woman with exercise towel and waterThe 60’s can be your decade of looking and feeling good about yourself. You’ve seen some of the changes in your skin and hair in your 50’s; and they do continue. Some you can help soften and some just become part of you. And it’s OK. After all, good living and experience does count!

Here are a few tips from the experts:

Continue with your moisturizing regimen and your creamy foundation.

Now, even a cream blush will last longer and not seep into the wrinkles. Smart Cover’s Two-in-One Glow Stick doubles as a cream blush and gives a hint of color on your cheeks and lips.

Use concealers every day to hide the dark eye circles that make you look tired all the time.

A concealer such as Smart Cover’s Perfect Touch Camouflage Crème helps hide the age spots, dark eye circles and all the fine lines that can show more with your thinning skin.

Lip liner is a lifesaver for lips, and helps soften the aging lip lines. At this point, you may notice that your lips seem to recede and need plumping with Smart Cover’s Lip Plumper Stick.

Hair color should be lighter not darker or full of highlights. We always say why go gray when you don’t have to or want to.

For some women who feel it’s time for some extra help with their wrinkles and aging skin, consult with a dermatologist or another board certified doctor who has experience with cosmetic procedures. There are many non-surgical choices such as injectables and laser treatments. Many injectables on the market offer different benefits. Botox, Dysport and Xeomin relax the muscles around the forehead and eyes. Fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm and Sculptra can sculpt the cheeks, furrows and other facials areas. There are also different types of laser treatments that re-stimulate the collagen in your skin and can also help with the age spots, rosacea and fine lines. And, Smart Cover will help cover the redness or bruising that you can get while healing from these procedures.

Stay tuned for skin care in your 70’s, 80’s and Beyond because it does matter!

Skin Care Series – From your 40’s to your 80’s and Beyond

women in her 50's photoTAKING CARE OF YOUR SKIN IN YOUR 50’S

As long as women take advantage of all the new body and skin care products that are available to them today, they can look better than ever and redefine middle age. It’s never too late to have a better diet and more exercise. No doubt, women in their 50’s begin to notice crows feet around their eyes, grey hairs in their eyebrows, dryer skin and yes, age spots begin to appear.

Here’s some advice from the experts:

Use a highly emollient moisturizer which will help keep your skin looking fresher and reduce the appearance of the fine lines.

Choose a creamy foundation so that your make-up doesn’t collect in the creases. If you want to hide your imperfections as well, Smart
Cover’s Perfect Touch Camouflage Creme will do the trick. You can use it as an all-over foundation.

Lip Pencil is now a must since lips lose their shape and seem to shrink. By outlining your lips, you can soften the lip lines then apply your lipstick. Smart Cover also has an Anti-Feathering Stick that you rub on the lip area before you apply your lipstick to avoid that “bleeding” look.

Blush – use either a creme or powder blush to give your face a bit of color to make you younger. Try to stay with the rose or peach tones; they are more natural.

Eyeliner is also very important to give your eyes more definition and make them look larger.

Brows can become sparse and begin to fade. So use a “brush-on” brow color (it’s much more natural than a thin pencil line) and select a shade close to the color of your hair.

Speaking of hair, its appearance is key to a youthful look. Invest in a great haircut and find a colorist who understands your needs and will cover the gray or give you highlights if that’s what you want.

Face CleaningTAKING CARE OF YOUR SKIN IN YOUR 40’S

We’ve had many emails from our customers of all ages asking us about how to take care of their skin relative to their age. Every decade brings changes to your skin and how you should care for it.

Let’s begin with how to care for your skin in your forties.

We know that the forties can be the hectic decade; balancing work, family and your home. Time is precious to you and there’s always stress associated with trying to do it all! Well, just be sure you make time for yourself and a simplified beauty regime.

Here’s some advice from the experts:

Choose a moisturizer for your skin type and wear it morning and night.
Sunscreen every day – you don’t want to have any additional sun damage which can cause premature aging.

Eye Cream every night. You can also try it during the day under your concealer so it will go on smoothly.

Use concealers to hide the dark eye circles and the tired eyes look.

Use a foundation with more coverage like Smart Cover to even out your skin tone and hide blotches that begin forming in your 40’s.

Brush on your blush or bronzer with an upward motion, since skin tends to sag as you approach your 50’s.

Mascara and Eye Liner become necessary in your 40’s to give your eyes more definition.

Find the right hair color to lighten up your face, cover your gray or add a few highlights for added sophistication. Invest in a good hair cut that’s appropriate for your 40’s lifestyle.

Stay tuned for our next blog on skin care in your 50’s. And that is a crucial time to really care about your maturing skin.
